Routes to Costa Rica (in detail)
1) Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

2) Rentista
For whom: those with steady income. Requirement: $2,500/month guaranteed income for 2 years or a $60,000 bank deposit (drawn as monthly payments to yourself).
3) Pensionado (Retiree)
Requirement: a lifetime pension of $1,000/month. The easiest and cheapest route for retirees.
4) Inversionista (Investor)

Healthcare

Costa Rica uses territorial taxation: only Costa Rica-sourced income is taxed; your foreign income is generally not taxed. DNV holders are explicitly exempt from local income tax — a big advantage for remote workers.
Permanent residency & citizenship
From temporary residency (Rentista/Pensionado/Inversionista) you move to permanent residency after 3 years — which also brings the freedom to work.
