Portugal D8 Digital Nomad (Remote Work) Visa
Live in Portugal while working remotely for foreign income. End-to-end process management.
The Portugal D8 visa (digital nomad / remote work visa) grants legal residence to people who earn their income by working remotely for an employer or clients outside Portugal. While the D7 is based on passive income, the D8 is based on active remote-work income.
Who Can Get the D8?
- Remote employees of a company based abroad.
- Freelancers whose clients are outside Portugal.
- Company owners with foreign-sourced income.
Common rule: income must come from outside Portugal.
D8 Income & Savings Requirements (2026)
The income threshold is 4× the Portuguese minimum wage, higher than the D7. With the 2026 minimum wage at €920:
- Main applicant: €3,680/month (€920 × 4) → €44,160/year
- Spouse: +50% → +€1,840/month
- Each child: +30% → +€1,104/month
Plus savings of €11,040 (single), increasing with family members.
D7 or D8?
If your income is passive (pension, rent, dividends), the Portugal D7 visa fits better and has a much lower threshold (€920/mo). If your income comes from remote work, the D8 is the route. Compare all EU options on our Residence & Citizenship Comparison.
Process & Timeline
Two steps: a consular visa, then conversion to a residence permit at AIMA in Portugal. Typically 30-60 days. Initial permit is 1 year, renewable; permanent residence/citizenship after 5 years (A2 Portuguese; dual citizenship allowed).
