What Is the Portugal Retirement Visa? Who Can Get It?

The D7, commonly called the "Portugal retirement visa" or "passive-income visa", is built on one simple question: can this person support themselves in Portugal without working? If you have regular, documentable income, the answer is yes — no investment required.

Although it is called a "retirement" visa, it is not only for retirees. You may qualify if you have:

• A pension (state or private) — the classic D7 profile.
• Rental income from property in Turkey or elsewhere — must be regular and documentable.
• Dividends, interest or investment income.
• Royalties.
• Remote income — though salaried remote workers usually fit Portugal's separate D8 digital-nomad visa better.

Portugal D7 Visa Requirements & How to Apply (2026)

1) Monthly income — and how it changes with your family

The income requirement is tied to Portugal's minimum wage, which is €920/month in 2026. So a single applicant needs at least €920/month (€11,040/year) in regular passive income.

• Spouse: +50% → +€460/month (+€5,520/year), so a couple needs €1,380/month (€16,560/year).
• Each child: +30% → +€276/month (+€3,312/year).

Income can come from several sources combined — e.g. a €700 pension plus €300 rent easily clears the €920 single threshold.

2) Savings requirement

Beyond income, Portugal wants a one-year buffer in a Portuguese bank account: €11,040 (single) or €16,560 (couple). It is not spent — it just needs to be there before your appointment.
