Spain is one of Europe’s most sought-after relocation destinations, thanks to its sunshine, world-class healthcare and quality of life. Key change: the real-estate Golden Visa was fully abolished on 3 April 2025. The right ways to settle in Spain now are income/savings-based residences — both our areas of expertise.

Why Spain?

• Healthcare: among the world’s best per the WHO; life expectancy among Europe’s highest.
• Climate & lifestyle: 300+ sunny days, vibrant street culture, excellent public transport.
• Location: short flights across Europe; free movement in Schengen.
• Cost: cities like Valencia, Málaga and Seville are markedly cheaper than Madrid/Barcelona.

The Golden Visa is gone — what now?

For years, “buy a €500,000 home, get residence” worked; that ended in 2025. Buying property no longer grants residence. The two correct routes are:

1) Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) — live on savings/passive income

For whom: those who want to live in Spain without working, on savings or passive income (retirees, rentiers).

• Requirement: proof of ~€28,800/year (4× IPREM) in income or savings; +~€7,200 per family member.
• Most-asked: “Do I have to deposit this somewhere?” No. It isn’t given to the state, isn’t frozen, isn’t an investment. You simply show the funds/income exist — the money stays yours.
• Watch out: you cannot work on this visa (including remotely, technically). If you’ll work remotely, the DNV is the right one.

2) Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) — for remote workers

For whom: professionals and freelancers working remotely for clients/employers abroad.

• Requirement: ~€2,763/month (2× minimum wage) + a university degree or 3 years’ experience.
• Advantage: apply from a consulate or from within Spain (in-country decisions in ~20 days). The Beckham Law can also give a 24% flat tax in the early years.

Healthcare

Spain’s public health system (Sanidad Pública) is world-class. Residents can join it once employed or via the optional “convenio especial” premium (~€60–160/month). At the application stage, valid private insurance (~€600–1,200/year) is required.

Tax

Stay 183+ days a year and you become a tax resident, taxed on your worldwide income. NLV renewal already requires this residence. DNV employees may use the Beckham Law — a 24% flat rate up to €600,000 for the first 6 years. Some regions levy a wealth tax (Madrid grants 100% relief). We always do tax planning before you move.

How long must you stay?

NLV: Spain must be your main home — in practice 183+ days/year; long absences jeopardize renewal. DNV: more flexible, but reasonable presence is expected for continuity.

Path to citizenship

The general rule is 10 years of legal residence. But for Latin American countries, the Philippines, Portugal, Andorra and Sephardic Jews it’s only 2 years. Spain officially restricts dual citizenship outside those countries (flexible in practice).

Common mistakes

• Wrong visa: a remote worker applies for the NLV — but you can’t work on the NLV. The DNV is correct.
• Thinking €28,800 is an “investment”: it’s neither a deposit nor an investment, just proof of means.
• Insurance error: co-pay policies are rejected by some consulates; full-coverage insurance is required.
• NIE/TIE delays: in-country steps drag without a local lawyer and power of attorney; we handle these with our network.

Who is it for?

A good fit: retirees and savers (NLV), remote professionals (DNV), citizens of Spanish-speaking countries (2-year citizenship advantage).
Less suitable: those seeking a local salaried job (separate work permit) or a passport without moving.
