Costa Rica Relocation & Residency Packages 2026
The easiest path to the “Pura Vida” life via digital-nomad and retiree residency — end-to-end support.
Costa Rica — with its “Pura Vida” philosophy, army-free stable democracy and extraordinary nature — is Central America’s safest and most popular relocation destination. It’s especially attractive for remote workers and retirees, and thanks to territorial taxation your foreign income is generally not taxed.
Why Costa Rica?
- Stability: no army since 1948; Central America’s most established democracy.
- Nature & health: 0.03% of Earth’s land but 5% of its biodiversity. Nicoya is one of the world’s 5 “Blue Zones” (longevity).
- Tax: territorial system — foreign income is generally not taxed in Costa Rica.
- Community: a large, established expat/retiree community; English is common in tourist areas.
Routes to Costa Rica (in detail)
1) Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)
For whom: remote workers with foreign income. Requirement: ~$3,000/month (~$4,000 for a family). 1 year + 1-year extension, with perks like local income-tax and import-tax exemptions. Does not count toward permanent residency.
2) Rentista
For whom: those with steady income. Requirement: $2,500/month guaranteed income for 2 years or a $60,000 bank deposit (drawn as monthly payments to yourself).
3) Pensionado (Retiree)
Requirement: a lifetime pension of $1,000/month. The easiest and cheapest route for retirees.
4) Inversionista (Investor)
Requirement: a $150,000 investment in real estate, a business or qualifying assets.
Cost of living in Costa Rica (2026)
| Item | San José / Central Valley | Beach towns |
|---|---|---|
| 1-bed rent | $600–1,000 | $700–1,300 |
| Groceries (one person) | $300–450 | $350–500 |
| Utilities + internet | $100–180 | $120–200 |
| Transport + social | $150–300 | $200–350 |
| Monthly total (one person) | ≈ $1,150–1,900 | ≈ $1,400–2,300 |
Imported goods can be pricey; shopping the local market (“feria”) noticeably lowers the budget.
Healthcare
Costa Rica’s public health system, CAJA, is mandatory for residents; dues are ~7–11% of income and cover all treatment. Many foreigners also use private insurance for speed; private hospitals are far cheaper than in the US (a medical-tourism hub).
Tax
Costa Rica uses territorial taxation: only Costa Rica-sourced income is taxed; your foreign income is generally not taxed. DNV holders are explicitly exempt from local income tax — a big advantage for remote workers.
Permanent residency & citizenship
From temporary residency (Rentista/Pensionado/Inversionista) you move to permanent residency after 3 years — which also brings the freedom to work. Citizenship generally requires 7 years of residence and a language/culture test (5 years for some Latin nationals and Spaniards). Costa Rica allows dual citizenship.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the DNV is permanent residency: it’s fast but does not count toward it. For the long term, choose Rentista/Pensionado/Inversionista.
- Skipping CAJA: CAJA registration is mandatory; neglecting it blocks renewal.
- Structuring the deposit wrong: the $60,000 Rentista deposit must sit in an approved institution and correct structure.
- Missing apostilles: documents must be apostilled and officially translated; gaps add months.
Who is it for?
A good fit: remote workers (DNV + tax advantage), retirees (Pensionado), those seeking nature and a calmer life.
Less suitable: those seeking a fast EU passport or broad visa-free access (the Costa Rican passport is strong but the process is long).

Часто задаваемые вопросы
DNV vs temporary residency?
The DNV is 1+1 year, fast and based on foreign income but does not count toward permanent residency. Rentista/Pensionado/Inversionista leads to permanent residency in 3 years.
Will I pay tax in Costa Rica?
Due to territorial taxation your foreign income is generally not taxed; DNV holders are explicitly exempt from local income tax.
What is CAJA, is it mandatory?
CAJA is the public health system; enrollment is mandatory for residents and dues are ~7–11% of income.
How does the $60,000 Rentista deposit work?
Held in an approved institution, you draw ~$2,500/month to yourself for 2 years; the money is yours, not given to the state.
How long to permanent residency/citizenship?
Permanent residency after 3 years of temporary residency; citizenship generally 7 years (5 for some Latin nationals and Spaniards).
Can I include my family?
Yes; spouse and children are added per person (Digital Nomad €360, Temporary Residency €1,525).
