Panama Relocation & Residency Packages 2026
Residency in Panama with its dollar economy and attractive tax system — a concierge package with attorney fees included.
Panama — with its US-dollar economy, regional finance/logistics-hub status and territorial taxation — is one of Latin America’s most practical residency destinations. It’s especially advantageous for entrepreneurs and retirees, offering one of the world’s most generous retiree-discount programs.
Why Panama?
- Dollar economy: the currency is effectively the US dollar; no exchange-rate risk.
- Tax: territorial system — income earned outside Panama is generally not taxed.
- Connectivity: Copa Airlines’ “Hub of the Americas”; short flights across the continent.
- Stability & banking: advanced international banking and modern infrastructure (Panama City).
Routes to Panama (in detail)
1) Pensionado (Retiree) — most popular
Requirement: a lifetime pension of $1,000/month (slightly more with a dependent). In return, the world’s most generous discounts: 25% off flights, 15–25% in restaurants, 20% at pharmacies, 15–20% on medical care, up to 50% on entertainment.
2) Rentista
For whom: those with regular passive income, via government bonds or a fixed-income structure.
3) Friendly Nations
For citizens of qualifying countries; after the 2021 reform an economic tie is required: $200,000 in Panama real estate, a $200,000 fixed deposit, or an employment contract with a local company. 2 years temporary → permanent residency.
4) Qualified Investor
Requirement: a $300,000 real-estate investment for direct permanent residency (no temporary phase, the fastest route). ⚠️ This $300,000 threshold is valid only until 15 October 2026; after that it permanently rises to $500,000 — timing is critical for this route, so acting now means major savings.
Cost of living in Panama (2026)
| Item | Panama City | Interior / beach |
|---|---|---|
| 1-bed rent | $800–1,400 | $500–850 |
| Groceries (one person) | $300–450 | $250–380 |
| Utilities + internet (A/C!) | $120–220 | $100–170 |
| Transport + social | $150–300 | $120–220 |
| Monthly total (one person) | ≈ $1,400–2,400 | ≈ $1,000–1,600 |
Note: A/C bills can be high in the tropics; Pensionado discounts noticeably lower the budget.
Healthcare
Panama City has modern, US-accredited private hospitals at prices far below the US (medical tourism). Private insurance runs ~$60–150/month. A public system exists, but foreigners usually prefer private care.
Tax
Panama uses territorial taxation: only Panama-sourced income is taxed. Income earned outside Panama is not taxed — a strong advantage for remote workers and international business owners.
Permanent residency & passport
In most categories you move from temporary to permanent residency, then apply for citizenship after 5 years of residence (with a Spanish and Panama history/constitution exam). The Panamanian passport offers visa-free access to 140+ countries (including Schengen).
Common mistakes
- Skipping physical presence: you must be briefly in Panama at filing; it can’t be done fully remotely.
- Assuming Friendly Nations is unchanged: post-2021 a passport alone isn’t enough; an economic tie (property/deposit/job) is required.
- Forgetting the repatriation deposit: some categories require an immigration deposit.
- Missing apostille/translation: documents must be apostilled and officially translated into Spanish.
Who is it for?
A good fit: retirees (Pensionado + discounts), remote workers and international business owners (territorial tax), those wanting dollar-based stability.
Less suitable: those who want to live within the EU or expect the process without any travel.
